At Human Landscape Studios, we’re exploring how people learn through surprise, uncertainty, and the moments when experience doesn’t match expectation. Predictive processing offers a compelling framework for thinking about these moments. Rather than describing the brain as a passive receiver of information, it suggests that we are constantly anticipating what comes next—using prediction as the foundation for perception, action, and learning.
That idea has reshaped several of the questions we’re currently investigating.
What happens when a child’s expectations are repeatedly met with safety? How might those experiences influence their willingness to explore, revise, and try again? And what role do relationships play in shaping whether uncertainty feels inviting or threatening?
This book doesn’t provide simple answers. Instead, it offers a vocabulary for thinking more carefully about the relationship between expectation, prediction error, and learning.
As we continue developing the ROOTS workbooks and exploring questions about curiosity, confidence, and formation, this is one of the conversations we’re returning to again and again.

Every page in a workbook teaches something.
Not only through the words it contains, but through the experience it creates.
One of the questions we’re wrestling with in the next Visual Echoes workbook – ROOTS is deceptively simple:
How much guidance is enough?
Too much structure, and children learn to look for the “right” answer.
Too little, and the page becomes confusing rather than inviting.
Some pages ask children to observe.
Others ask them to wonder.
Others invite them to notice patterns they may never have considered before.
Each activity is designed with the same question in mind:
Does this page create curiosity, or merely ask for compliance?
At this stage, we’re moving sketches across the desk, rewriting prompts, and testing different visual layouts. Often the smallest changes make the biggest difference.
Sometimes a page is technically correct but emotionally flat.
Sometimes removing a single sentence creates more room for a reader to think.
Progress rarely happens in a straight line.
Design, much like development itself, often advances through revision rather than certainty.

What Makes a Question Emotionally Safe?
Questions are not neutral.
Two people can ask exactly the same words while communicating completely different meanings.
“What happened?”
One version invites reflection.
The other invites defense.
Children begin learning this distinction long before they understand it intellectually.
A parent’s expression.
A teacher’s tone.
A pause before speaking.
The speed of a correction.
These small moments help teach whether questions are places to think or places to protect ourselves.
This matters because curiosity requires vulnerability.
Every genuine question begins with an admission:
“I don’t know.”
If uncertainty consistently carries embarrassment, criticism, or shame, people often learn to avoid asking altogether. They may seek certainty instead of understanding.
We’re interested in exploring whether emotionally safe questions share common characteristics.
Perhaps they communicate:
You are still accepted.
Mistakes are expected.
We are exploring together.
The goal is understanding, not evaluation.
If those conditions exist, questions may become invitations rather than tests.
That possibility has implications well beyond childhood.
Parents.
Teachers.
Leaders.
Therapists.
Researchers.
Anyone who hopes to help another person learn is also shaping the emotional meaning of inquiry.

Could Early Relationships Teach Children That Being Wrong Is Safe?
Every project at Human Landscape Studios begins with a question rather than an answer.
This investigation began with a simple observation.
Two children encounter the same mistake.
One leans in.
The other pulls away.
The difference is not necessarily intelligence, effort, or motivation. It may be something much quieter: the meaning the child has learned to assign to being wrong.
Our current question is this:
Could early relationships influence whether prediction errors become opportunities for learning or signals of danger?
Predictive processing suggests that learning happens when the world surprises us. The brain constantly predicts what will happen next, and when those predictions are wrong, we receive information that helps us update our understanding.
But people do not experience every surprise the same way.
Sometimes surprise becomes curiosity.
Sometimes it becomes shame.
Sometimes it becomes withdrawal.
Attachment theory offers an intriguing possibility. Children who repeatedly experience responsive, regulating relationships may gradually learn that moments of mismatch are survivable. A mistake does not automatically threaten connection. It becomes something that can be explored rather than escaped.
This is not an established scientific conclusion. It is the question we are currently investigating by bringing together research from developmental psychology, attachment theory, predictive processing, learning science, and education.
We’re particularly interested in the possibility that curiosity may not simply be a personality trait.
It may also be a learned relationship to uncertainty.
If so, then every classroom, family, and organization is quietly teaching people what being wrong means.
Some environments teach:
“Mistakes threaten belonging.”
Others teach:
“Mistakes are information.”
That distinction may shape far more than academic learning. It may influence creativity, resilience, innovation, and the willingness to keep asking questions.
This investigation is ongoing.
We don’t yet know the answer.
But we believe it is a question worth asking.

The Moment After the Mistake: Before curiosity becomes a question, it may begin with safety around surprise.
A child is trying to fit a wooden shape into the wrong opening. The triangle will not become a square. The child presses harder, turns it, pauses, and looks up. One child laughs. The mistake has become interesting. The hand turns the shape again. The body leans closer. The face opens. Failure has not ended the game; it has made the game more specific.
Another child freezes. The same mismatch occurred, but the room has changed. The eyes leave the toy and search the adult’s face. The shoulders lift. The hand retreats. The mistake has become information of a different kind. Not “try another way,” but “something may be wrong.”
The puzzle is the same. The prediction error is the same. The child is not.
This is the human question underneath the research: Why do some children become more curious after failure while others become more fearful?
The easy answer is temperament. Some children are bold; others are cautious. There is truth in that. Infants arrive with different thresholds for novelty, arousal, frustration, and approach. But temperament cannot be the whole story. Children do not learn alone. They learn inside faces, voices, pauses, repairs, rhythms, and returns.
A child’s earliest experiments happen in relationships. They reach. Someone responds. They cry. Someone comes or does not. They fall. Someone startles, soothes, scolds, laughs, ignores, explains, or panics. They mispronounce a word. Someone delights in the attempt or corrects the error as if it revealed something deficient. Over thousands of small exchanges, a child may begin to learn not only what the world is like, but what mismatch means.
This essay asks one HLS question: What if secure attachment primarily teaches children that prediction errors are safe?
Not harmless. Not always pleasant. Not always easy. Safe enough to approach.
What prediction error means
In predictive-processing language, the mind is not simply receiving the world. It is constantly using prior experience to anticipate what is likely to happen next. Incoming information is compared against those expectations. When the world does not match the model, the mismatch is called prediction error.
Prediction error is not a personal failure. It is information.
A baby expects the caregiver’s face to reappear in a familiar game, and it does. The model holds. A toddler expects a tower to stand, and it falls. The model must adjust. A child expects a friend to share and the friend refuses. The social world has supplied data the child did not predict.
Learning depends on such errors. A system that never encountered mismatch would never update. Surprise is one of the ways the world teaches.
But human beings do not treat every surprise as equally useful. The same unexpected event can become curiosity, shame, anger, withdrawal, laughter, or alarm. Predictive processing accounts emphasize precision: the system must decide which signals matter and how much weight to give them. If an error is treated as trustworthy and manageable, it can update the model. If it is treated as threatening or overwhelming, the system may defend against it, avoid it, or assign it to danger rather than learning.
This is where attachment becomes relevant. Attachment theory began not as a theory of curiosity, but as a theory of security and exploration. John Bowlby described attachment as a behavioral system that keeps the infant close to protective caregivers under threat. Mary Ainsworth’s work then showed something crucial: secure attachment was not merely about clinging. Securely attached children used the caregiver as a secure base from which to explore.
That phrase matters.
A secure base does not remove uncertainty from the world. It changes the child’s relationship to uncertainty. The child can move away because return is possible. The room can become strange because the relationship remains available. The toy can fail, the stranger can enter, the caregiver can leave briefly, and the child’s system can still recover.
Security does not mean nothing goes wrong. It means wrongness is not the end of regulation.
The early lesson: mismatch can be survived.
Development is full of prediction errors. The breast or bottle is not available at the exact expected moment. The caregiver’s face stills. The toy disappears under a cloth. The body rolls farther than intended. The block tower collapses. A word fails to produce understanding. The child reaches for something forbidden and meets a boundary. Each moment contains an expectation and a violation. What makes the difference is not only the event itself, but the relational field around it.
A caregiver who is generally responsive does not prevent all distress. That would be neither possible nor useful. Instead, responsive care helps the child move through distress and return to organization. The child learns, not in words, that arousal can rise and fall. Surprise can happen without abandonment. Frustration can be met without humiliation. Error can lead to repairs.
At HLS, this discussion is specific: Secure attachment may teach the child how to metabolize prediction error.
The child does not merely learn “my caregiver comes back.” The child learns a broader grammar of mismatch:
The world can surprise me.
My body can become activated.
Someone can help me return.
I can try again.
The error is not proof that I am unsafe.
Over time, that grammar may become portable. The child brings it to puzzles, classrooms, friendships, sports, language, and imagination. A failed attempt becomes a clue.

Consider two children learning to write a letter.
One makes the line too long. The result looks wrong. The child studies it, laughs, and tries again. The mistake has narrowed the search space. The child now knows something about the movement.
The other child makes the same line too long and collapses into distress. The page becomes evidence. The hand stops. The adult may see perfectionism, but something deeper may be happening. The mismatch is not being processed as useful information. It is being processed as danger to the self, to connection, or to approval.
This distinction matters for education.
Much of learning requires a child to remain present at the edge of not-yet-knowing. Reading, mathematics, music, friendship, moral development, and creative work all require encounters with error. The child must be able to notice a mismatch without being destroyed by it.
Curiosity, then, may not be simply a hunger for novelty. It may be the capacity to stay in contact with uncertainty long enough for learning to occur.

That capacity is not built by praise alone. Praise can become its own fragile prediction system: I am safe when I perform well. The deeper condition is relational safety around imperfection.
A child who has repeatedly experienced repair may find failed predictions less catastrophic. The model can bend because the self does not have to break.
What research supports, and what it does not.
Several established findings support this synthesis.
First, attachment is linked to exploration. The secure-base concept is central to attachment theory: children who trust caregiver availability are more able to explore unfamiliar environments. This does not mean every securely attached child is bold in the same way, or that every cautious child is insecure. It means that regulation and exploration are developmentally linked.
Second, early caregiving contributes to emotion regulation and stress recovery. Caregivers help infants regulate before infants can regulate themselves. Through repeated co-regulation, children gradually build self-regulatory capacities. This is one of the strongest developmental bridges between relationships and learning.
Third, prediction error is central to learning. Predictive-processing and reinforcement-learning traditions both treat mismatch between expectation and outcome as a key teaching signal. In reward learning, prediction-error signals are among the best-supported findings in neuroscience. The broader predictive-processing framework is more uneven, but its weaker and safer claim is well supported: expectation shapes perception, attention, learning, action, emotion, and bodily interpretation.
Fourth, development is model-building. Contemporary developmental science increasingly describes children as active learners who update expectations through action, interaction, and social scaffolding. Early experience does not simply add content to the child’s mind; it tunes what the child attends to, expects, trusts, avoids, and tries again.
What is not established is the exact HLS claim: that secure attachment primarily teaches children that prediction errors are safe.
That is not a consensus statement. It is an emerging synthesis.
No single study proves it. It arises from the intersection of attachment theory, predictive processing, developmental cascades, curiosity research, and learning theory. The claim should therefore be held carefully: secure attachment may help calibrate the child’s response to mismatch so that surprise is more often available for learning rather than rapidly converted into threat.

A child does not first learn error in a classroom. The child learns error in a body beside another body.
A baby reaches for a cup and knocks it over. The caregiver’s response becomes part of the event. The spill is not just water spreading across the table. It is a face, a tone, a movement, a rhythm. The caregiver may gasp sharply, shame the child, laugh warmly, narrate the accident, invite repair, or silently clean it up with visible irritation.
The child is learning the physics of cups. The child is also learning the social meaning of unintended outcomes.
A toddler falls while learning to walk. Adults often reveal the meaning of the fall before the child has decided what it means. Some children look to the caregiver’s face before crying. The body has registered impact, but the social world helps interpret it. Is this alarming? Is this recoverable? Is this part of learning?
In this sense, caregivers do not merely comfort children after prediction error. They help classify prediction error.
This matters because the child’s nervous system cannot treat every mismatch as a learning opportunity. Some surprises are genuinely dangerous. Touching fire, stepping into traffic, approaching an unsafe person- these prediction errors require urgent protection. The developmental task is not to make children fearless. It is to help them discriminate.
Secure attachment may support precisely that discrimination. Because the child’s system is not chronically preoccupied with relational uncertainty, more attention remains available for the task itself. The child can ask: What happened? What can I try? What does this mean?
In less secure conditions, relational questions may intrude earlier: Am I in trouble? Will help come? Is this my fault? Should I hide the mistake? Will I be laughed at? Should I stop trying?
The prediction error has been rerouted from exploration into self-protection.

This brings us to a larger possibility: Curiosity may be trust in prediction error. Not trust that the world is always kind. Not trust that every question is safe. But trust that a mismatch can be approached, examined, and survived. The curious child is not the child without fear. Curiosity often contains arousal, uncertainty, and risk. What distinguishes curiosity from fear is not the absence of activation, but the meaning assigned to activation.
The body leans forward rather than away. The eyes widen rather than shut down. The hand tries again.
A secure relational history may make this forward motion more available. It may teach the organism that not knowing is different from being lost.
This has implications for how adults respond to children’s mistakes.
When a child gets an answer wrong, the adult is not only teaching the subject. The adult is teaching the meaning of error. When a child breaks something, forgets something, misreads something, loses a game, stumbles through a sentence, or asks a strange question, the adult’s response participates in the child’s prediction system.
Do errors lead to humiliation?
Do errors lead to abandonment?
Do errors lead to repair?
Do errors lead to added information?
Do errors lead to relationships?
Over time, these answers matter.
The danger of overusing attachment
A warning is necessary.
Attachment language is often misused. It can become a soft determinism, a way of sorting people into types, or a way of blaming caregivers, usually mothers, for every later difficulty. HLS rejects that use.
Attachment is not destiny. Children are shaped by temperament, siblings, peers, schools, neighborhoods, culture, poverty, discrimination, illness, chance, and later relationships. A child can experience insecurity and still become curious, brilliant, brave, and deeply alive. A child can experience security and still struggle with anxiety, shame, or avoidance. Human development is plastic, layered, and unfinished.
The developmental question is not “What did attachment make this child become?”
The better question is: What did repeated relational experience make easier or harder for this child to expect?
That question leaves room for change.
It also protects the dignity of the child. A fearful response to failure is not a character flaw. It may be an intelligent adaptation to a world in which errors carried relational cost. The child learned what the environment taught. Later environments can teach differently.
Implications for parenting
If this synthesis is substantially correct, then parents do not need to manufacture constant success. They need to make failure relationally survivable.
This happens in small moments.
A child spills milk. The adult says, “That surprised you. Let’s get a towel.”
A child gets the puzzle wrong. “That one didn’t fit. What did we learn about the shape?”
A child loses a game. “Losing feels sharp. We can feel it and still play again.”
A child asks a question the adult cannot answer. “I don’t know. Let’s find out.”
These responses do not celebrate incompetence. They protect learning. They keep the child’s attention connected to the world instead of forcing it to defend the self.
The adult becomes a translator:
This mismatch is not danger.
This mistake is data.
This feeling can move.
This relationship remains.
Implications for education
Schools often say they value curiosity while organizing classrooms around error avoidance. Grades, speed, public comparison, and narrow performance metrics can teach children that being wrong is costly. In such settings, only children who already experience error as safe may be able to remain curious.
A prediction-error view of learning suggests that classrooms should be designed around recoverable mistakes. Students need repeated experiences in which wrong answers become usable information rather than public evidence of deficiency.
This does not mean lowering standards. It means improving the emotional ecology of difficulty.
A serious classroom is not one where no one fails. It is one where failure can be examined without humiliation.
Implications for adult life
Adults also live inside prediction systems.
Some people meet correction as an attack. Some meet uncertainty as possibility. Some hear ambiguity as rejection. Some cannot begin unless success feels guaranteed. These patterns are not always conscious beliefs. They may be old bodily forecasts about what mismatch costs.
The HLS frame does not ask adults to blame childhood. It asks them to notice the hidden model:
What happens in me when the world does not confirm what I expected?
Do I get curious?
Do I get ashamed?
Do I get angry?
Do I disappear?
Do I try again?
There is no need to turn every response into a childhood story. But there is value in asking whether the nervous system learned that prediction error was safe enough to use.
HLS question
Established science supports several separate claims: early relationships shape regulation and exploration; children build models through repeated experience; prediction error is central to learning; attention and precision determine which signals update the system; memory and expectation are reconstructive and future-oriented.
The HLS question is that secure attachment may function, in part, as early training in the safety of prediction error.
The securely held child is not protected from surprise. The securely held child is accompanied through surprise often enough that surprise can become information.
That may be one root of curiosity.
Not the only root. Not a guarantee. Not a universal law.
But a powerful possibility: Before a child can love learning, the child may need to learn that being wrong does not end belonging.

Today I kept thinking about the moment after a child gets something wrong. Not the mistake itself. The moment after.
The small turn of the head. The eyes lifting from the broken tower, the misshapen letter, the spilled bowl, the puzzle piece that would not fit. Before language arrives, there is already a question in the body.
What happens now?
So much of a life may gather there. An adult thinks the child is asking whether the answer was correct. But perhaps the child is asking something more.
Am I still safe?
Are you still with me?
Can this be repaired?
Is the world angry?
Should I try again?
There is a kind of childhood in which wrongness remains attached to the thing itself. The block did not fit, so turn it. The tower fell, so build a wider base. The drawing looks strange, so add another line. Error stays local. It belongs to the experiment.
There is another kind in which wrongness escapes the object and enters the self. The block did not fit, and suddenly the child is wrong. The letter is crooked, and the whole room feels like judgment. The tower falls, and the body learns to become small.
I do not want to make this too simple. Children are not clay. Parents are not gods. Every life is made by more hands than anyone can count. Still, I cannot stop watching that upward glance. The child checks the face of the world. A soft face can return the error to the object. A hard face can send it inward.
Perhaps curiosity begins long before questions. Perhaps it begins in the first thousand experiences of being surprised and not left alone with the surprise.
The child reaches. The world does not behave.
The child looks up. Someone says, with a towel, a laugh, a steady hand, a patient voice: Yes. That happened.
